bswift Presents 2010 Fun at Work Award to Members 1st Federal Credit Union

And the laughter goes to….Members 1st Federal Credit Union (Members 1st) for its exemplary lead in having fun at work… applause, applause.

bswift CFO (Chief Fun Officer) Patrick McGarrity announced the first-ever winner of the firm's Fun at Work Award during the company's annual conference in Chicago last week. The recipient, Members 1st Federal Credit Union, is a 650-employee firm in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. Akron Children's Hospital in Akron, Ohio was named Runner Up in the contest.

Engaging in workplace fun is a serious matter to bswift, an innovator in business process outsourcing and software solutions for benefits administration. In fact, More Fun is one of the company's stated core values (along with Higher Standards and Greater Accountability). "We firmly believe that engaging employees in a fun and appreciative workplace not only boosts morale and strengthens company culture, but it can also increase productivity and impact the bottom line," said bswift CEO Rich Gallun.

bswift launched the Fun at Work Award contest March 15 as part of its 2010 Fun at Work initiative that included the release of a list of 100 Ways to Have More Fun at Work. The list, dedicated to sharing Fun at Work ideas with other companies, is available on the bswift website and social media pages (including Facebook and LinkedIN).

Fun at Work judges accepted entries from companies via written submissions describing fun workplace environments, activities and values. The Award winner received its choice of a karaoke machine or a Margaritaville Frozen Concoction Machine for its office.

At the Award presentation, bswift CFO McGarrity said, "At Members 1st Credit Union, the creation of a fun work environment clearly starts at the top with President and CEO Robert Marquette. One look at his picture says it all. His alter ego is the Original Advice Guy, a super hero who travels around the community (also appearing on TV and billboards) to assist consumers with their financial decisions. At Halloween, he chooses a theme and spends three days visiting all 43 Members 1st branch locations in five counties to judge decorations, costumes and award prizes. Every morning he is in the office, he visits every cubicle in every department to say 'good morning.'"

"Our philosophy is to dispel the traditional aura associated with the banking world and create a relaxed, approachable and fun atmosphere for our Members 1st associates and our Credit Union members," said Members 1st CEO Marquette.

Not surprisingly, Members 1st reports a 98.7 percent satisfaction rating among its 172,000 members.

Akron Children's Hospital in Akron, Ohio received Runner-Up award and was noted for the originality of its fun activities, many of which occur during its annual Hospital Week. Highlights include:
  • Yoga & Zumba Classes – half the fun seems to be laughing when people turn the wrong way and bounce off their neighbors.
  • Doggy Brigade & Boo Brigade – hospital therapy dogs roam the halls with their owners; at Halloween the dogs (and owners) dress up and have a costume contest.
  • Fun Day – an in-hospital carnival with games, prizes, popcorn, snow cones, relay races, chair and hand massages, etc.
